In late December 1977 Jimmy Carter visited the Shah. On New Year’s Eve he made a speech in the Niavaran palace when he pronounced Iran “an island of stability in one of the most troubled areas of the world”. Here is another cluster of demonstrators who are focussed on his visit. They have constructed a large paper Uncle Sam, have over-painted a stars and stripes with a pirate’s skull and are critical of the US human rights record as well as its relationship with Israel.
